Installing the screen (summer 2016)
Installation was a complex process conducted in several stages over a period from late July to early September 2016.
- Relocate electrical cables – The cables and trunking just inside the archway had to be moved out of the way and made safe before installation could begin and then replaced after the installation was complete.
- Erect scaffolding – To be able to work on the frame and install the glass required three levels of scaffolding, built inside and outside the archway. As the work progressed, the scaffolding had to be reconfigured several times to the needs of the different stages of the work.
- Make and install the frame – The frame is made of substantial (100mm x 100mm) timber to support the weight of the glass. It was made in sections off site from an accurate template of the shape of the arch and then installed. It was pre-drilled and fittedwith studs to support the glass.
- Make and Install the glass – The three pieces of glass were cut and drilled off site using accurate templates of the frame and mounting studs. On site each piece was lifted by a spider crane, manoeuvred through the arch and secured on the studs. The joints between each piece were sealed with plastic strips.
- Install the base unit – The units between the glass and the gallery floor were made off site and assembled to complete the whole structure in the archway.
- Install sound absorption – The acoustic absorbent drapes needed to compensate for the closure of the arch were hung on newly installed rails just below the ceiling on the north and south gallery walls
The work was carried out by Allder Glass , with woodwork subcontracted to New Mill Joinery.
